Hypnotherapy Training Courses at the Hypnotherapy Training Institute of Britain (HTI)

The HTI is a recognised course provider for the British Society of Hypnotherapists (Est 1950), the longest established professional organisation for Hypnotherapy in the UK.  With over 20 years of hypnotherapy teaching experience we are widely recognised as experts in the training of professional hypnotherapists.  We have trained many physicians, psychologists, psychotherapists and other professionals as well as individuals from all walks of life to use advanced hypnosis for career applications and personal goals.  Our work has received considerable public attention through media coverage of our in-depth hypnosis for medical and health applications, addictions and deep psychological problems.  Our comprehensive training programme, comprising 200 hours of intensive classroom teaching in Courses 1-4, with options to study to over 300 hours, aims to teach ALL of our pupils to the highest standards, aiding them to become competent professionals and to deliver the highest standards of service effectively and safely to their clients.  We provide our trainees with the highest standards of hypnosis training to help them develop their clincal practice and its financial base more quickly.  Graduates from our career training programme receive several accreditations and qualifiy for membership of well-respected national and international professional hypnotherapy organisations with meaningful standards.  Their training also qualifies them for membership of many professional registers, councils, societies and other voluntary regulatory bodies that currently exist in the field of hypnotherapy in the UK.

Training Courses:

The Institute provides hypnosis training courses at several levels from foundation to intermediate and advanced levels and offers a variety of postgraduate support programmes along with training in marketing and building a hypnotherapy practice.  The Institute teaches to the highest educational standards while being very practical and interactive in teaching the skills of effective clinical hypnosis.  It offers a range of courses in an intensive, accelerated format for the serious student, the most effective way to acquire the skills of hypnotherapy.  The Institute staff are highly trained in academic psychology and highly experienced in various psychotherapy and counselling systems in addition to being trained in several styles of hypnotherapy and therefore bring a great range of skills and information into the specialised practice of hypnotherapy.  Content of our courses includes the most modern, scientifically-validated information and the best evidence-based methods from research and clinical practice.  Our courses teach the power of classical hypnosis and in-depth understanding of emotional problems through analytical hypnotherapy.   Our programme of training courses also includes a substantiial training in Medical Hypnotherapy, as well as additional postgraduate courses provided to health professionals in conjunction with the Institute of Hypnotherapy for Medical and Dental Practice (IHMDP) a registering body associated with the HTI.

Our in-depth approach to hypnotherapy means directly addressing the deep emotional aspects of problems in addition to using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) methods and various "rational" approaches to therapy.  We teach a comprehensive rather than a superficial hypnotherapeutic approach, which is especially relevant for deeper psychological problems often encountered in therapy.  This comprehensive approach enables an individual to understand themselves, their emotional conflicts and life challenges in much greater depth and provides far greater meaning for the individual about themselves and their lives.  Research has consistently shown that human happiness and achievement in various fields is highly related to the level of meaning, purpose, direction and control individuals feel they have in their lives.

The Institute provides training courses for the following groups:

1.  Courses for individuals seeking in-depth training to become professional clinical hypnotherapists

2.  Courses for practitioners who wish to add hypnosis to their professional practice e.g. Psychology, Psychotherapy, Counselling, Medicine or to upgrade their existing hypnotherapy skills.

3.  Courses for individuals pursuing personal development, performance enhancement or a personal interest in the art and science of hypnosis.

The Institute’s courses do not focus on superficial techniques with dubious claims for their effectiveness but which are inadequate when dealing with serious personal problems regularly seen in clinical practice.  Hypnotherapy has a vast theoretical and practical skills base as well as being the basis from which the discipline of Psychotherapy developed and accordingly Hypnotherapy requires a serious training for it to be effective in professional therapy practice.  Psychotherapy, whether a Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or other school is a related but seperate discipline, and is taught over 4 years of mainly intellectually-based study, while hypnotherapy mastery requires its own separate comprehensive training.  The study of hypnotherapy teaches principles and techniques from which methods such as Neuro-lingusitic Programming (NLP), visualisation, suggestion-based therapies, many mind-programming methods and various "energy" medicine systems were also developed or draw heavily from.  Each of our courses can be taken separately depending on levels of prior experience.  Our 200 hours of basic training is comprised of intensive classroom work and does not include home study hours.  Some hypnotherapy schools include home study hours when describing their courses as lasting, for example, in the range of 150 to 500 hours when the classroom contact may actually be in within the range of 60 to 130 hours.  To maintain quality and consistency of teaching we do not franchise our training courses to teachers who are not validated trainers of the Institute.

Training Standards & Accreditation:

Training courses in hypnotherapy vary from totally inadequate to very effective.  It is advisable not to make decisions about courses and their training standards solely on the basis of recommendations from one of the many competing accrediting or "umbrella" bodies as there is no statutory or overall regulatory structure governing hypnotherapy.  There are, however, many voluntary organisations and registers that a graduate of most schools of hypnotherapy can join as an individual member.  The UK government has stated that it will not provide statutory regulation for psychotherapy or hypnotherapy as it is not deemed appropriate for these professions but supports these disciplines in developing their own forms of voluntary self-regulation of which there are several approaches which have been developing over more than 20 years.  HTI staff have been highly involved over several decades in the development of various standards of education and competence, including NVQ and Occupational Standards, but these current educational standards are accepted by the Institute as defining only a very basic level of practitioner achievement that does not yet reflect the competence level of an advanced hypnotherapy practitioner.

Before embarking on a training course it is advisable for prospective students to carry out their own research to satisfy themselves about the particular system of hypnotherapy they will learn, details of the teaching experience and the clinical background of the principal instructor, details of the training programme (teacher presenting in the classroom, practical and theoretical aspects of courses, study materials, etc), full costs of training, accreditations of courses and trainers and the awards granted on successful completion of training. There are substantial differences in the approaches taken among the various training programmes in the UK.  Some trainings emphasise a largely technique-based practice, others favour a theory-driven model taken from one or more of the main psychotherapy and counselling systems, for example, psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, etc., others take a metaphysical approach, some schools are "Ericksonian" in orientation while others use a classical approach with integrations from modern developments.  There are many forms of voluntary accreditation, validation, certification and registration in hypnotherapy as it is not a statutory-regulated profession and this can be very confusing to prospective students.  In some cases an "Accredited Course” may mean a very short and therefore inadequate training programme or an amalgamation of therapy systems providing a very limited skills base in any one of them.  In other cases a training programme may teach to very basic educational standards or. in other cases, be heavily focussed on theory-learning but which leaves the graduate lacking in the practical effectiveness needed for clinical practice.  It is necessary to learn from experienced trainers with genuinely extensive clinical experience in order to maximize your potential for success as a therapist.  Buliding a clinical practice is heavily dependent on referrals from satisfied clients.  Research shows that different trainers produce very different results with their students.  Numerous studies report the tendency for "low-functioning trainers" to produce "low-functioning graduates" and for "high-functioning trainers" to produce "higher-functioning graduates" and recorded that the gap between the graduates' clinical effectiveness with clients is very great.
